Direct Line home insurance recommends garden insurance

Direct Line home insurance has recommended families ensure they have adequate garden insurance as they spend more time outside in the hotter summer months.

The group has warned that damage to gardens in the UK has already amounted to £423 million this year alone, far above the average costs over the last three summers.

Lawn damage accounts for most of the reported accidents at 64 per cent, followed by broken furniture and windows at 37 per cent.

Britons now spend an average of nine hours a week in their gardens, which contain an average of £314 worth of moveable items, meaning that insurance is more important than ever.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, said: "The obvious 'knock-on effect' of us enjoying more time in our gardens will be to spend more money on them, which is why Direct Line is encouraging homeowners not to overlook their gardens when evaluating their home contents for insurance purposes."

The Direct Line Home Contents policy insures garden contents for up to £1,000.
