Insurance 'crucial' facet of gap year

Students thinking of taking a year out before heading to university are being encouraged to consider taking out a comprehensive insurance product.

Research carried out by Direct Line indicates that almost a third of the 77,000 pupils planning on taking a gap year have not thought about travel insurance.

This may be the case despite many planning to take part in daring activities such as scuba diving and white-water rafting.

According to a spokesperson for Direct Line, Carmel McCarthy, some people may have their possessions covered on their parents' policies.

"But…students are taking more and more valuable items with them when travelling and it's important they have the right insurance in place when doing so," she added.

Students were urged to be "vigilant" in terms of caring for their possessions, especially with items such as cameras and video recorders which captured special moments on a holiday.
