Direct Line: Insurance to be reviewed at Christmas

The Christmas season is an appropriate time to look at home contents insurance cover, Direct Line has suggested.

Andrew Low, head of home insurance at Direct Line, said that the firm will increase home contents coverage by £5,000 or ten per cent during the holidays.

He suggested that people should check with their insurers if they have expensive items worth more than £1,500 to make sure they are properly noted on their policy.

"Direct Line home insurance provides cover for children's items such as computers or HiFi's which are temporarily in student accommodation up to £5,000 or 15 per cent of the contents sum insured - whichever is greater," Mr Low added.

Recent research by Liverpool Victoria indicated that almost 15 million Britons are leaving valuable possessions on display in their homes.

Theft accounts for more than one-third (36 per cent) of UK crime each year, the figures revealed.
