BIBA: Maintaining a vehicle is a driver's part of the car insurance deal

The importance of keeping a vehicle maintained for car insurance reasons has been stressed by the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA, said drivers have a "responsibility to take reasonable care".

Asked whether a properly maintained car would help with insurance claims, he replied, "Absolutely."

If an insurer is expected to cover someone for unlimited liability to someone else and at least £1 million for third party property, "then you need to stick to your part of the bargain and have a safe vehicle".

Mr Trudgill advised people with older vehicles to ensure their MOT is up to date.

Research by esure car insurance has found that British drivers are likely to experience 31 per cent more accidents in the winter than the summer.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents urges motorists to have their cars fully serviced before the winter and test their antifreeze.
