Esure creates jobs in Glasgow

Esure, a car and home insurance provider, has announced that it will be recruiting 500 new workers in its Glasgow offices, despite the effects of the recession.

The company said that its "rapid sustained growth" from last year means that it has to take on extra service and claims staff to keep up with business expectations in the years to come.

Peter Wood, esure's chairman, said: "In these terrible economic times, I'm absolutely delighted to be able to make a commitment to Scotland and to Glasgow."

The sentiment was shared by Alex Salmond, the first minister of Scotland, who welcomed the move. He added: "Today's news is a ringing endorsement of one of Scotland's greatest strengths - our human capital."

Esure, which also owns the brand Sheila's Wheels, was established by Mr Wood in 2000. As well as vehicle and household contents insurance, it also offers cover for holidays and pets.
