Direct Line Car Insurance: People drink driving to save money

Direct Line Car Insurance has conducted a survey which reveals that the recession means many Brits are likely to drive after a night of drinking in order to save on taxi costs.

The poll revealed that 1.3 million people in the UK are more likely to get behind the wheel after having a drink, with 18-34-year-olds being the most likely to do so.

Eight per cent of this age group admitted they might be tempted to drink drive to save on taxi costs, compared to three per cent of 34-55-year-olds and one per cent of those over the age of 55.

Maggie Game, head of Direct Line Car Insurance, said: "It's worrying to see the number of people who would drink and drive because they feel saving a few pounds outweighs the risk to themselves and others."

Recent research from moneysupermarket.com found that those with drink driving convictions pay an average of 82 per cent more on their car insurance.
