Zurich: PPI may not be priority during credit crunch

Zurich has conducted a survey which shows that many credit-crunched Brits are reluctant to spend money on payments protection insurance (PPI) as they do not believe it is a financial priority.

The insurer found that less than four out of ten Brits are willing to reduce their monthly outgoings to fund some form of mortgage or family protection, as the credit crunch leaves many of them in straightened financial circumstances.

However Zurich advised that while PPI and income protection insurance may not seem like a priority, the increase in redundancies caused by the recession may lave many people in the UK struggling to meet their mortgage payments or pay their credit card bills.

Peter Hamilton, Zurich UK Life's protection development director, said: "In the current climate, it's more important than ever that people seek financial advice to help ensure they have appropriate cover in place to protect their immediate needs and safeguard against a potential loss of income."

Zurich recently advised that singletons are more at risk without payments protection insurance as they do not have a partner who can help them if they lose their job or are unable to work.
