Norwich Union Insurance: New Year's Eve is burglars' big night out

Norwich Union Insurance has issued a warning to people to check their insurance before the festive season begins as statistics show that it is a period of high activity for burglars.

According to the insurer, New Year's Eve is the worst night of the year for domestic break-ins and homes are 25 per cent more likely to be burgled than on any other day.

While Christmas Day and Boxing Day record some of the lowest crime statistics of the year, the items stolen on these days come to a total average value of £1,600, which is more than normal.

Greg Gladwell, director of household claims at Norwich Union, said: "While spirits may be high on December 31st don't forget to lock up the house behind you otherwise you might find someone else will be enjoying all your new gifts."

Last month Abbey Home Insurance warned that the recession is also likely to cause an increase in domestic burglaries and cautioned people to make sure they are covered over Christmas.
